A good friend of mine has worked in the world of aluminum flagpoles and flags for years and provided me with some fascinating information on the MN flag a little while ago. Each state in the Union flies its own uniquely designed flag. Having said that, and according to surveys held by organizations of all kinds, many of these flags are considered rather "dull." The reason for this is a common similarity found on a good number of states flags.
The Minnesota flag is not the oldest flag hoisted on flag poles in modern days. State flags have been subject to change over the course of many years and the same applies to Minnesota. In fact, the first flag was flown during the late years of the 1800-s. At that time one side was white whereas the other was colored blue. In 1957 changes were made to that flag such that it became the one that flies or represents the state today.
The initial flag that was hoisted on flag poles of all kinds during the late years of the 1800-s was designed by the so called Amelia Hyde Center. The first flag of MN featured the Minnesota seal on a blue colored background. A red colored ribbon featured in the seal showed the motto: "L'etoile de nord," which is French for the North Star.
The current Minnesota flag has been subject to a substantial amount of criticism over the years. This is not the case for the flag of Minnesota alone. A number of state flags are said to have a poor flag design. Criticism has been that the image of the MN state seal is a depiction of so called "Manifest Destiny," and the inevitability of land being taken by white settlers.
In years of the past, a number of bills have been presented to organize a task-force to study possible changes to the flag of Minnesota. A number of designs have been presented but changes have yet to be produced. Whatever may occur to the flag, and despite its commonality to other state flags, it flies just nicely from smaller and taller residential flag poles throughout the United States.
