When you pack your lightweight suitcases for a trip, it's not what you pack, but how you pack that matters. Follow some of these tips to help you pack your suitcase so that it doesn't cause you undue stress during your trip.
Pack Lightly -- While you want to ensure that you bring what you need on your trip, bringing too much will just leave you juggling more items than you need to have with you. A good rule to follow is to lay everything you want to pack out on your bed or on a table. Then take away half of the items. Another smart thing to do is give yourself plenty of packing time. Time crunches tend to result in adding extra items and overpacking.
Avoid Filling Your Case To Bursting -- The TSA conducts some random inspections of checked luggage. If it's your case that is pulled and checked, then you want to make sure it goes through as easily as possible. Having a case full to bursting makes it harder to inspect and to close afterwards, so avoid overpacking your case. Also, if you fill a case too fully and it ends up being inspected, some of the loose items in the case can fall out and become lost.
Save Space By Rolling Clothing -- Rolling your clothing will save some space and prevent wrinklng. And if you roll your shirts, pants, and accessories together in a roll, it makes it easier to pull your outfits out of the case later.
Pack Underwear And Socks In Your Extra Shoes -- When shoes are packed but nothing is stuffed into them, it wastes a lot of valuable packing space. Also, if you don't want your personal items visible if your bag is pulled and opened for a security inspection, then you may prefer to stuff your underwear into your extra shoes.
Use Small Toiletries -- According to the TSA, each passenger is limited to 3 ounces each of liquid, gel, and aerosol toiletries, stored in containers enclosed in a single 1 quart plastic bag. Because of this limit, bring as few toiletries as possible in small containers. Many different travel size products are available so you don't have to go through the trouble of filling empty containers with soap and shampoo. Or, even better, if you are staying in a hotel, take advantage of those toiletries and leave yours at home. You won't have to worry about packing it or about bringing it back with you at the end of your trip, either.
