Tips For Packing Carry On Luggage

Air travel is more expensive than ever before. Airlines charge fees for extra checked baggage. They also charge for checked bags over the weight limit. In this environment, packing carry on luggage as efficiently as possible can save both time and money.

To pack a carry-on, start with clothes. Pack socks and underwear first. Fold them tightly and place them in the bottom of the suitcase. The crevices around the handle tubing are a great place to store socks and underwear. Next, fold clothing that will need ironing later. Lay them flat in the bottom of the suitcase. Then, take clothing that can be fluffed in the dryer or worn as-is. Fold them in half and then roll them up from the bottom. Set rolled clothing to the side.

Second, pack shoes. Use the space on the inside of shoes to insert small items. Place the shoes on top of folded clothing, and place them sole to sole. The notch between heels and the sole can be used to store breakable items. Shoes can either be wrapped in clothing or placed in shoe bags. Place socks inside leather shoes so that the shoes will maintain their shape.

Third, minimize toiletries. Regulations permit up to 3.4 ounces of each liquid item in a bag. They also require that toiletries be secured inside plastic zip bags. For this reason, passengers should buy travel-sized tubes and bottles of most toiletries. For example, with shampoo, a passenger could buy a travel-sized item, or the passenger could buy a small empty bottle and pour shampoo into it.

When possible, pack samples of things like perfume. In addition, buy combination products. Use a shampoo/conditioner combination. Also, bring makeup that can do double-duty. Pack a lipstick that can be used as a blush, or wear tinted moisturizer instead of foundation. Avoid bringing a hair dryer if one can be borrowed at the hotel. When finished, place the toiletries with the rolled clothing.

Then, pack work-related electronics and files. Place electronics and papers inside of pouches or hard cases to protect them. Keep them vertical inside the bag so they are easy to access. Place cords, headphones, and chargers into the bag's outer pockets. Next, pack rolled clothes and toiletries around the work items. Do not cover up work items. Just surround them so that the work items can be accessed quickly.

Fifth, don't pack bulky items like coats or boots. Wear them or carry them instead. Carry a soft cloth handbag that can easily be compacted and stuffed in the suitcase. When on the plane, do not pack bulky items into the overhead bins. Place them under the seat rather than taking up space that other passengers could use.

Packing carry-on luggage efficiently can lighten the load inside checked baggage. Passengers may even find that they can avoid checking bags. Follow a simple strategy. Pack items in the right order, and pack them the right way. Take as few toiletries as possible and consolidate them into smaller containers. Finally, wear or carry bulky items. With a little preparation, packing a carry-on can be easy to handle.
