A Written Account Of A Backpacker's Journeys

There are many reasons for backpacking - recreation, adventure or simply to get away from it all. You will have plenty of experiences which however will be soon forgotten. Come to think of it, it would be very interesting to keep an account of your backpacking odysseys.

A Record of Your Backpacking Days

Think back of the last time you strapped on your backpack and went hiking and camping. What are your most vivid recollections? Go back farther in your backpacking days. What are the places that you have explored, the breathtaking vistas, the occurrences, and the faces that are still etched in your memory? Most are probably buried in the sands of time. If you had kept a backpacking journal, this won't be the case.

There are many instances in history of people who kept their own personal records. One of the more famous is Anne Frank of World War Two fame. In her diary, Anne kept a running commentary of the two years her family spent hiding from the Nazis. Your own version of a diary of course will be in a more positive note, one that you will open every now and then and reflect on the days long past.

There are things that you must observe when keeping a travel journal. The journal must be small for easy stowing and to save on backpack space. Second, it must be in a waterproof and durable holder or container to protect against liquid and material damage. Third, the journal should contain blank areas to write your notes. Fourth, the journal should contain cue spaces to remind you to keep notes on specific things. Cues should include.

The persons in your group,

Where you backpacked and if you enjoyed it,

The people you made contact with and the details,

The land features and characteristics and the prevailing weather,

The roads taken and your farthest reaches, and

Rare sightings of flora and fauna.

A good record should have accumulated sufficient data for future reference to include the following.

Contact information for other backpackers and people you met,

Enough detail to provide you or a friend with a guide if you backpack the location a second time.

Memories to reflect upon years later, and

An interesting written account of experiences for future reading.

As much as possible, keep a running account of your experiences or immediately thereafter. A day long hike or an overnight trek is a story in itself.

Backpacking is a great way to commune with nature. Make sure to preserve the experience.
