When we are scheduled to go on a trip we get so impatient to leave the house that we lose sight of some basic precautionary measures. There is a list below that contains some things that you need to do before leaving. This way, you can avoid forgetting to do things that will be a cause of regret when you get home.

Reminder One: Your water heater should be at its lowest level.

Second: Do not turn off your air conditioner if it is summer. Your power bill will be up, but you need to protect your pets and electronic devices from the daytime heat.

Item Three: If it is springtime or fall, you can lower your heater setting. During winter, your home should be left sufficiently warm. Your pets and water mains have to be protected even at the cost of paying more for your power bills.

Reminder Four: Give the impression that somebody is at home by leaving shades and drapes as they normally are.

Fifth: Have a radio that is programmed to turn on and off at different times to give the impression that the house is occupied.

Sixth: Close and lock all access in and out the house.

Reminder Seven: Unplug your computer and all other electronic gadgets because they might be damaged in case of a storm. Disconnect your phone line from the modem. Conversely, leave it hooked if your answering machine is your computer. Protect your electronics and appliances with surge regulators.

Item Eight: Leave your car in the garage with the door closed, so passersby will not know that you will be away for some time.

Ninth: Disable connections to the garage door. Unplug it if need be, but leave the fuse on if you intend to leave an appliance running, like a refrigerator that is connected to it. If you do these nine precautionary measures, then you are on your way to a worry-free vacation. You can then enjoy your vacation to the fullest knowing that you have taken care of everything at home.
