Be honest. Chances are that before you took your first cruise, you secretly thought that cruises are exactly like the ones you saw on Love Boat. Cruising was all about sunny, tropical destinations like Bermuda, Mexico and Hawaii.

Since traveling by cruise ship is more popular than ever before, thanks to its affordability, you can not only go to those sunny destinations but also to more unusual ports like Hong Kong, Alaska, Norway and the Amazon River.

Warm waters are still ideal for cruising. Most people who go on a cruise the first time, often go to the Caribbean. Areas such as the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, are certainly some of the most popular. Many travelers also love the Dominican Republic, the Cayman Islands and Jamaica. Usually, cruise ships heading for the Caribbean set sail from ports along the Eastern United States coast as well as Florida. Ships heading to Bermuda depart from the same ports.

People who live on the West Coast of the United States often cruise to Hawaii and its islands. The main goal of some vacationers is simply to see the black sandy beaches of Punaluu. Alaskan cruises are great also because of some of the side trips that can be taken. Passengers can gaze at glaciers either by land, by helicopter or even a guided walking tour. Salmon fishing and glimpses of life during the Gold Rush are some of the attractions of the location. These trips also offer the chance to see wildlife. Passengers have been known to spot humpback whales, moose, wolverines, sea lions and bears.

During the American winter months, some of the most popular cruise destinations are in the warm lands of South America, such as Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. Some of the more adventurous may decide on an Amazonian cruise or choose to cruise the Galapagos Islands.

The Indian ocean might be great for travelers who prefer less commercialized locations. Locations such as Madagascar, the Seychelles Islands and the Spice Islands, are unforgettable locations. Plus, you could even extend your vacation to include a Kenyan safari.

The Mediterranean Sea is a gold chest for history enthusiasts. Some of the locations include Italy and the remains of what used to be ancient Rome. Greece is another popular Mediterranean destination seeped in history. Many of the packages for Grecian cruises include visits to the islands of Corfu and Crete. Most European destinations are great for anyone wanting to get a taste of the past. Europe has something to offer everyone - Majestic Scottish castles and even the Latin charm of Barcelona in Spain.

Deciding where to go is one of the hardest parts of cruise travel. For a lot of us, budget dictates where we can go. Are you more inclined to visit a warm area, or do you prefer the cooler charm of Alaska? Regardless of how high or low your budget is, there are cruise packages available for any pocket.
