The airport security officers have to screen everyone, regardless of age (even babies), before they can go through the security checkpoint. Inspection of children however is in most cases in close proximity to and under the watchful eyes of the parents.
Inspection of children in airports is a sensitive issue and the Transport Security Administration (TSA) people are trained to be circumspect in doing their job. They are especially amiable and pleasant when dealing with children. If your child becomes uncomfortable or upset, security officers will consult you about the best way to relieve your child's concern.
NEVER leave babies in an infant carrier while it goes through the X-ray machine.
You should also expect your entire luggage including the children's things to be scanned by the X-ray machines. Diaper bags, clothes and toys must all be inspected.
All child-related equipment that will fit through the X-ray machine must go through the X-ray machine. Examples include: strollers, umbrella-strollers, baby carriers, car and booster seats, backpacks, and baby slings.
If possible, fold or collapse the strollers or booster seats and other gear prior to inspection. Secure items that are in the pockets, baskets, or attached to the equipment and place it on the X-ray belt for inspection. These should be placed in plastic bins that are provided in all airports.
If any of your child-related equipment does not fit through the X-ray machine, security officers will visually and physically inspect it.
Security officers will be ready to extend assistance to passengers who will need help in gathering all their things.
If your child can manage it, it will be better to let him walk through the metal detector by himself. The Security officers will have to again check you and your child if the alarm sounds as you pass through the metal detectors while carrying your child.
If the baby is in the stroller or baby carrier, both will have to be examined apart so you have to remove your baby to allow for the inspection.
As you go through the metal detector doors, you are not allowed to pass your child to the person next to you.
Do not pass your child to the Security Officer to hold.
If necessary, help the Security Officer inspecting your child.
Do not be offended with the inconveniences you will have to pass through because it is for the public good. You are duty bound therefore to extend all cooperation and assistance instead of obstructing their work.
