When to Replace Your Cigar Humidor's Humidifier

The humidifier you keep in your cigar humidor should not have to be changed very often at all. The most common types of devices that you'll see on the market are sponges and beads. These can be recharged with water or with a mix of water and vegetable glycerin over and over again. Provided that you treat them properly, they should keep your humidor in good shape for many years.

There are some occasions when you will have to change the humidifier. For example, if you happen to use tap water in your humidifier, you're likely going to need to replace it because of the residue that that tap water will leave within the human to find materials. If your humidifier gets too dried out, you may just want to go buy a new one instead of trying to recondition beads or a sponge that has dried out past the point of being saved.

It's more likely that your hygrometer will go out than it is that your humidifier device will go out. You can recalibrate them according to your manufacturer's instructions and see if that might be the problem if you're humidity levels are constantly reading low. If you do have a very cheap humidifier device in your cigar box, you may want to replace it with a better one. They're really not that expensive and, if you think about it, ruining an entire box of cigars will probably cost you more than a new humidifier device.

If you have had your humidifier for quite a while, over a year, for example, you may want to replace it. This is entirely up to you and, as long as it seems to be functioning properly, there's really no reason to go out and buy a new one. If you can't get the humidity levels up to the percentages that you would like, you can always add a supplementary humidifier to the box.

If all of this fails, don't forget to check your hygrometer. Sometimes, the device will simply need to be recalibrated. You may be getting some erroneous readings from the device and that may be leading you to believe that you have some sort of problem with your humidor when there is nothing wrong with that at all. The worst-case scenario would be having to re-season the box, which is something that most people never have to do, even if they have their box for many years.
